"Prototype" is among the most misused terms in our hobby. I am aware of the auction that you mention. That lure ended up selling for $574.75 + fees.
Webster defines "prototype" this way: 1 : an original model on which something is patterned : archetype 2 : an individual that exhibits the essential features of a later type 3 : a standard or typical example 4 : a first full-scale and usually functional form of a new type or design of a construction (such as an airplane)
I am aware of well over a dozen of these frog type lures painted in three different colors. It would not be possible to select one lure from that group and proclaim it to be the prototype used to create the others.
I personally own five of these lures plus an unfinished blank, which I believe to have originated from the Southern Bait Company. I do not regard any of mine or others that I have seen as prototypes of Creek Chub or anyone else.
Southern Bait Company is known to have made a Popeye Frog lure. I can't say for sure that the frog in question is that lure. I am attaching a picture of the card and another lure which could qualify as their Popeye Frog
