While I can't say that the screw eye on your Beetle is original to the lure, I have several Beetles like that. Rare to find tho. As I understand it, it might have been used simply because the normal screw holding in the lip from underneath was not available in factory assembly at that point. Parts shortage? The screw eyes were used on other Creek Chub lures like the 100s and 200s and sometimes described by collectors as "double line ties". Actually, it was just easier to unscrew than a traditional screw while fishing if the fisherman wanted to flip the lip over for top water action. Maybe that would work on a Beetle also. I'll have to try it. I hope this information is helpful, but is certainly not authoritative!
