There’s not a paucity of books focused on Creek Chub lures. Dr. Harold E. Smith M.D. provides great knowledge about the lure company, its products, and history in his prolific works. There are other authors that address the subject, most listed below. The history and description of the Creek Chub company, and its products and history, is well documented.
It’s a challenge to add to the published record about Creek Chub in a way that augments information and insight into the subject. After perusing Fred Sweeney’s recently received new book, The Creek Chub Bait Co. An In-Depth Guide To The Lures & Other Collectibles, I think he has. In a brief review, here’s how and why.
Color Charts
A common feature in lure books, the color codes and picture examples, are very crisp and uniform. What I noticed was, for a number of colors, there were photographs of variations of the same color used in different lure models, laid out legibly.
Lure Components
Early lure description books illustrated lure parts with hand drawings. Sweeney provides hi-resolution images of lure components (eyes, lips, other hardware) at a scale that makes such easy to recognize.
Boxes
Box illustrations are also sharp and legible. And there are many.
By adding classification, “dog tags’, to the box descriptions, it’s easier to to identify which lures went into which boxes when looking at individual lure descriptions. Box size dimensions are provided in different levels of description.
Lure Descriptions
Lure description facets are many and mutable. So much to think about. Here are the lure attributes described that make Sweeney’s model numbered lure descriptions notable. The attributes that are detailed where possible include:
Body
Dimensions
Hardware
Eyes
Marking
Finishes
Scarcest Catalog Colors
Specials
Boxes and Contents
Boxes – HERE’s where the lure is matched with box(es) This information rocks.
Pocket Catalogs – Again, the lure is matched with the literature included in the box.
Order Form
There are other aspects of Sweeney’s work to appreciate. A pleasing one that stuck in my craw was Fred’s appeal for folks to join the NFLCC in his book’s Forward.
Thank you Fred for a fantastic book, and for the promotion of fishing lure appreciation.
