I placed an ad in a Jackson, Tn. newspaper for old fishing tackle when I started collecting lures in the 1980's. Mr.Brown Hawley in Camden, Tn. called me and told me about the Red's Sure Catch lure. In 1938 Mr. J.A.Cole there was tinkering with a set of ignition points and came up with a hook that hooked a fish 2 ways. Cole showed it to Brown and his partner in the Chevrolet dealership. The 3 of them soon had friends trying the lures on the Tennessee river with great results. They got a patent on Feb. 8, 1940. They soon had 2 large hardware companies planning to sell the hooks named "Red's Sure Catch".Mr. Cole now had the tools needed and a supply of ignition points so He was making all the lures in his garage.Large display cards of 12 lures were made and single lures on a card with instructions were also made.Mr. Cole had made a lot of lures and just before hundreds of lures were shipped World War 2 ended it. All the display cards, singles, and other items were stored in 2 metal barrels in back of a shed owned by the Wismer's to be opened when the war was over. Mr. Cole died at age 83 and after the war no one cared about the lures. In the 1980's Red Wismer died and the barrels were found while settling the estate. The back of the shed had log ago collapsed on the barrels. One was full of water and a lot in the other.Mr. Hawley made a guess at how many 12 displays were useable in one barrel plus those sent to sales people and friends before the war at 70-80. This one was wet but still in great condition, A single lure and the great story that was in the NFLCC Gazette in a 1980 issue. All this mailed to you in USA. $215 personal check please. for pics Email your ph# flex1@charter.net or call 731 694 4808 Thanks Joe for this great site.
